Bella Hunt & DDC

Bella Hunt & Dante Di Calce is an Italian-American artist duo born in the 1980s who live and work in Marseille. Behind the duo's simple and naive forms hide a possible and different society than ours.

Entering the institutional scene two years ago, the duo recently exhibited at the Ricard Foundation in Paris in 2018, at the Regional Museum of Contemporary Art Occitanie (Mrac) in Sérignan in 2019. Behind the duo's simple and naive forms hides the possibility of a society different from ours. This would be based on greater coexistence between people, great humility and respect for vernacular traditions, for a future that respects the environment. After producing pottery whose natural pigments were integrated in « fresco » in a mixture of lime, the American-Italian duo is now gaining momentum, with bronze works and more architectural sculptures. However, their practice remains - this detail counts - on a human scale. Their works speak of a past (or even a future?) common to all of humanity. Like the brotherhood of the Pre-Raphaelites, from which they borrow their surnames, the two artists refer to a world before perspective, to a pre-modern world in which the race for progress was not the main story. However, their dynamic differs from that of the anti-industrialization movements of the 19th century: Bella Hunt & DDC do not refuse progress, but propose that it be overcome.
